Mumbai: In a recent operation, the Mumbai Police destroyed illegal cannabis saplings discovered in the hilly terrain near the Bhandup hill reservoir. The saplings were found growing in a damp, isolated area, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.
Natural Growth Suspected
Deputy Commissioner of Police Hemraj Rajput stated that preliminary investigations indicate the saplings likely sprouted naturally from seeds discarded by drug addicts who frequent the secluded hill area. “There is no evidence of systematic cannabis cultivation. The saplings appear to have grown naturally due to damp soil conditions,” Rajput explained. He added that no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered so far, and a further inquiry is underway to determine the exact circumstances.
Tip-Off Leads to Discovery
The matter came to light after local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Jagruti Patil received a tip-off regarding suspected cannabis cultivation in the region. Acting on the information, Patil, along with party workers, visited the hilly stretch and observed cannabis plants growing on the damp ground. She promptly alerted the Bhandup police, who rushed to the spot.
Upon arrival, the police conducted a panchnama—a legal document recording the scene—before systematically destroying the saplings. The operation was carried out to prevent any potential misuse of the plants.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the Mumbai Police to curb illegal drug-related activities in the city. While no arrests have been made, authorities remain vigilant and are monitoring the area to ensure no further growth occurs.
