Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to give a facelift to the century-old Sri Rangacharlu Memorial Hall, popularly known as Town Hall, one of the major landmarks in Mysuru, at a cost of Rs 6 crore. MCC will soon take up repair and renovation of the heritage structure in consultation with experts.
Historical Significance
Constructed in memory of Sri C Rangacharlu, the noted Dewan of the erstwhile Mysuru princely state under Chamaraja Wadiyar, the hall commemorates his contributions to the state. Rangacharlu assumed office after the British restored power to the Mysuru royal family and served as Dewan for nearly 22 months between 1881 and 1883. Historians note that the hall was built in 1884, following demand for a Rangamandir, at what was then Doddarayapete Kalyani.
A Landmark with a Legacy
With a history spanning 142 years, the Town Hall hosted numerous events by prominent personalities before Kalamandir was built. The design of Bengaluru’s Town Hall was reportedly inspired by Mysuru’s structure. However, the heritage building is now in urgent need of restoration. Wooden doors, windows and beams have deteriorated over time, while cracks, leaks and other structural issues have developed. The hall was last renovated by the government in 1998 and 2003-04. Restoration has been delayed as any work on the structure requires approval and oversight from the heritage committee and the department of archaeology.
Restoration Plans
MCC has now drawn up plans for comprehensive repairs, including park improvement, landscaping, illumination and rainwater harvesting. MCC commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif said that Rs 6 crore has been earmarked for the project, which will be executed in two phases. The work will be carried out through the department of archaeology, given the building’s heritage status.
