Nashik Airport Expansion Gets DGCA, BCAS Approvals for Kumbh

The expansion plan for Nashik airport, operated by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), has received approvals from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). This development paves the way for accelerated execution of the project ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027.

Project Overview

The Rs572-crore expansion project, sanctioned by the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Development Authority, aims to handle the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the mega religious event. The work is being undertaken by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation. The approval from aviation authorities is expected to fast-track ongoing construction, with the project designed to enhance the airport's capacity by nearly threefold.

Current and Future Capacity

Currently, the airport handles around 300 passengers per hour, which is considered inadequate to meet the expected rush during the Kumbh Mela. Once expanded, it will be capable of handling up to 1,000 passengers per hour, significantly improving the travel experience for devotees and other travelers.

Key Infrastructure Additions

The expansion plan includes several major components:

  • Construction of a new 17,800 square meter integrated terminal building.
  • Development of a 1.15 lakh square meter apron to improve aircraft parking capacity.
  • Creation of 25,000 square meters of vehicle parking space.
  • Installation of modern facilities such as aerobridges and advanced security systems.

Operational Guidelines

Airport authorities have been directed to follow standard operating procedures during construction and maintain close coordination with air traffic services. Daily updates on ongoing works will be shared to ensure the safety of flight operations throughout the expansion period.

Location and Current Connectivity

Located at Janori, about 20 kilometers from Nashik city, the airport currently operates flights to major cities such as New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. It is also equipped for night landings, providing flexibility for flight schedules.

Economic and Regional Impact

Industry representatives have expressed optimism about the project's potential to significantly improve connectivity and boost economic growth in the region. Manish Rawal, vice-chairman of the Nashik Industries and Manufacturers’ Association, stated that the airport expansion would facilitate smoother travel for devotees, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen the district's position as a key regional hub.
