Over 80% of Nashik city is grappling with water cuts after a power outage at a major pumping station disrupted supply for several hours. The incident occurred at the Gangapur pumping station, which supplies water to most parts of the city. Officials said the power failure early morning halted operations, affecting water supply to residential and commercial areas.
Extent of Disruption
The outage impacted over 80% of the city's areas, leaving residents without water for most of the day. Many localities reported low pressure or no water in taps. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) issued an advisory urging citizens to use water judiciously until normalcy is restored.
Cause and Restoration Efforts
The power failure was attributed to a technical glitch at the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) substation. Engineers worked on emergency repairs, and power was restored by afternoon. However, NMC officials said it would take time to resume full water supply as pumping systems need to be gradually brought back online.
Residents expressed frustration over the lack of prior warning. Many had to rely on stored water or purchase from tankers. NMC has arranged for additional water tankers in worst-hit areas. Officials assured that supply would normalize by evening.
Impact on Daily Life
The water cuts disrupted daily routines, with schools and offices reporting inconvenience. Hospitals and essential services were prioritized for water supply. Citizens took to social media to complain about the sudden disruption and demand better infrastructure.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of Nashik's water supply system to power failures. NMC is reviewing plans to install backup power at key pumping stations to prevent future occurrences.
As of late evening, water supply was gradually being restored in most areas. Residents are advised to store water in advance for any such emergencies.
