A newly modernised zoo has been established at Madabula village in Kalaburagi district, offering a significant boost to wildlife conservation and eco-tourism in the region. Spread across approximately 42.3 acres, the zoo features 23 enclosures that house a diverse range of animals, including tigers, lions, bears, turtles, crocodiles, spotted deer, golden jackals, zebras, and langurs. Additionally, dedicated bird enclosures have been constructed to accommodate various avian species.
Development and Funding
The zoo has been developed at a total cost of Rs 44 crore, with substantial contributions from multiple sources. The Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB) provided Rs 27.6 crore, while the Karnataka Zoo Authority allocated Rs 6 crore. The forest department spent Rs 50 lakh specifically on plantation and grassland development within the premises. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre highlighted the collaborative effort, noting that Chittapur MLA and Minister Priyank Kharge took keen interest in the project.
Minister Khandre emphasised the need for increased greenery in the region due to ecological concerns and assured that steps will be taken to allocate additional funds in the upcoming KKRDB meeting. He described the facility as the second-largest zoo in Kalyana Karnataka, following the one in Hampi.
Animal Species and Future Plans
The zoo is expected to house as many as 56 animal species. Currently, two lions have been brought from Bannerghatta National Park, and more species will be introduced over the next three months. The enclosures have been designed to provide a natural habitat for the animals, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
Educational and Visitor Information
The zoo aims to serve as an educational hub for schoolchildren, offering them insights into wildlife and biodiversity. It will be open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, except on Tuesdays. The entry fee is set at Rs 75 for adults, Rs 40 for children aged 5 to 12 years, and Rs 25 for government schoolchildren. Adequate parking facilities are available, with space for 50 cars and 20 two-wheelers.
This initiative is expected to promote wildlife awareness and conservation efforts while providing a recreational space for the local community and tourists.
