Panaji: In a dramatic rescue operation on Tuesday evening, nine youngsters from Delhi were saved from drowning off Morjim beach after being swept into deeper waters by a powerful current. This incident occurred despite repeated warnings issued by lifeguards and police personnel to the group of visitors.
Details of the Incident
According to Drishti Marine, the state's official lifeguard agency, the rescued individuals were part of a larger group of approximately 25 visitors. Out of these, 15 entered the sea. As the group drifted further offshore due to the strong current, six managed to swim back to safety on their own. However, nine required immediate assistance from the lifeguard team.
Rescue Operation
A Drishti Marine official stated, 'Our lifesavers responded immediately, bringing four people ashore using rescue boards, two on a jet ski, and three with rescue tubes.' The rescue operation was carried out by a team of five lifeguards: Vinod Salelkar, Vikram Talkar, Sant Parab, Vikas Chavan, and Mahadev Gaude. They were supported by an onshore team that coordinated medical assistance for the rescued individuals.
All nine rescued individuals are reported to be in stable condition and have been provided with necessary medical care. The swift action of the lifeguards prevented what could have been a major tragedy.
Safety Advisory
This incident serves as a reminder for beachgoers to adhere to safety guidelines and heed warnings from lifeguards. Strong currents can be unpredictable, especially during the monsoon season. Visitors are advised to swim only in designated safe zones and avoid venturing into deep waters without proper supervision.
