Oil India discovers major gas reserves in Jaisalmer

State-owned energy major Oil India Limited (OIL) has announced a significant discovery of natural gas reserves in the Dandewala onshore oil and gas fields located in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, as reported by Vimal Bhatia. The company confirmed that the average gas inflow from the find was recorded at an encouraging 25,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) from a depth of approximately 950 metres.

Milestone for Rajasthan's hydrocarbon sector

This discovery marks an important milestone in the state's hydrocarbon sector and further solidifies the status of western Rajasthan as a strategic energy hub with immense potential. The find is expected to contribute significantly to India's domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported fuel resources.

Union minister's confirmation

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri confirmed the development on Saturday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing its importance in bolstering domestic energy production and reducing reliance on imported fuel resources. He highlighted that such discoveries align with the government's vision of energy self-sufficiency.

The Dandewala fields are part of the larger onshore exploration efforts in the region, which has been gaining attention for its hydrocarbon potential. OIL's successful drilling at this depth demonstrates the viability of extracting gas from deeper reservoirs in the area.

This discovery is expected to attract further investment in exploration and production activities in Rajasthan, potentially leading to more finds and enhanced energy security for the nation. The state government has also welcomed the development, viewing it as a boost to the local economy and employment opportunities.
