Orchard Tourism in Himachal: Farm Stays and Fruit Picking

Orchard tourism in Himachal Pradesh is attracting travelers seeking authentic rural experiences away from overcrowded hill stations. Visitors can participate in fruit cultivation and harvesting, including apples, pears, cherries, plums, and apricots. Guided orchard tours, farm stays, and learning about organic farming practices have become major draws.

Origins in Kotgarh Valley

The concept was pioneered in the historic Kotgarh valley of Shimla district, where Satyanand Stokes introduced commercial apple farming nearly a century ago. Today, the valley remains a key destination for horticultural heritage tourism.

Expanding to Major Fruit Belts

Orchard tourism has spread across Himachal's fruit-growing belts, including Baghi, Ratnari, Narkanda, Matiana, Kotkhai, Dodra Kwar, and Cheog. These locations offer sprawling orchards and mountain landscapes.

Sanjay Austa, who runs the MeenaBagh homestay in Ratnari, was inspired by a visit to Switzerland where he experienced strawberry harvesting. He now offers guided orchard tours, fruit plucking, and insights into organic cultivation. "Guests can pluck fruits, learn about cultivation techniques, and understand different varieties of organically grown produce," Austa said.

Impact on Rural Tourism

According to tourism officials, orchard tourism has become a pillar of rural tourism in Shimla district. Thousands of visitors now choose extended stays in these quiet locations, preferring peaceful countryside over crowded tourist hotspots. The trend is creating new economic opportunities for rural communities across the state's apple belt.
