In a swift operation on Tuesday, forest officials rescued a 10-kg pangolin from Gobindpur-Srisundarpur village under the Phulnakhara forest range in Cuttack district. The rescue was prompted by a timely alert from local residents who spotted the animal late Monday night.
Rescue Operation Details
A team of forest officials reached the spot after being alerted by villagers and carried out a careful rescue operation. The pangolin was initially examined at the veterinary hospital in Nuabazar before being shifted to Nandankanan Zoological Park for observation. Experts at the park will continue to monitor its health and decide on its release into the wild.

Cuttack city DFO Biswaraj Panda said, “Pangolins are shy, nocturnal animals. Finding one in a human settlement is uncommon. Our team ensured it was rescued without injury and sent to Nandankanan for proper care.”

Pangolins are shy, nocturnal mammals that feed on ants and termites. They are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and are listed as endangered due to poaching and habitat loss. Encounters with humans are rare, making this rescue noteworthy.
