PIL Filed in Bombay HC Over Alleged Damage to Pat Wetland in Sindhudurg
PIL Filed Over Pat Wetland Damage in Sindhudurg

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court's Kolhapur bench, alleging that the natural hydrology of the 'Pat Wetland' in Sindhudurg district has been compromised due to cement constructions and reclamation activities involving dumping of mud and boulders.

Allegations of Environmental Damage

The PIL, filed by environmental activist Omkar A Keni, claims that rampant tree cutting is adversely affecting the natural habitat, food chain, and various species found in the shallow wetlands. The petitioner states that the Pat gram panchayat is actively engaged in felling indigenous trees and reclaiming the lake bed under the guise of beautification.

Role of Tourism Authorities

A board installed by the Maharashtra Tourism and Development Corporation (MTDC) indicates that the beautification and development at Pat Lake is being undertaken by the Directorate of Tourism. The petitioner has objected to these beautification and development works, arguing they are detrimental to the wetland's ecology.
