Jaipur: Porcupine quills were discovered embedded in the body of tiger T-120, also known as Ganesh, during routine monitoring by the forest department on Tuesday. The tiger is currently under continuous observation, with its movement being closely tracked by field staff and wildlife veterinarians.
Current Condition of the Tiger
DFO Ranthambore, Manas Singh, stated, "Teams on the ground are regularly monitoring the tiger’s condition while keeping a close watch on its behaviour and movement. Preliminary observations have found the tiger moving normally, with no immediate signs of distress."
Risks from Porcupine Encounters
Wildlife officials noted that encounters between tigers and porcupines are not uncommon in forest areas. However, such clashes can sometimes turn fatal for big cats if quills deeply pierce the body, leading to severe infections, difficulty in movement, or inability to hunt. In several cases across tiger habitats, injured tigers have required prolonged monitoring and treatment after porcupine attacks.
Next Steps for T-120
Forest staff and veterinarians are assessing the condition of T-120 and will decide on further intervention, if necessary, based on the tiger’s health and movement pattern. A staff member said, "Monitoring through field patrols and camera surveillance is expected to continue in the coming days."
