Bathinda: Punjab reported 49 new farm fire incidents on Sunday, bringing the total count to 9,718 for the season. The district of Ferozepur emerged as the worst affected, recording a maximum of 918 crop residue burning cases as of May 24. It was followed by Moga with 752 cases, Bathinda with 746, Tarn Taran with 714, Amritsar with 705, Sangrur with 690, Gurdaspur with 636, Ludhiana with 628, Muktsar with 537, Fazilka with 415, and Patiala with 412.
Other States Report Farm Fires
On Sunday, Madhya Pradesh reported 161 farm fire cases, Uttar Pradesh reported 50, and Haryana reported 10 crop residue burning incidents. According to the Punjab Pollution Control Board's action taken report dashboard, 768 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed in Punjab as of the evening of May 23. Among these, Moga district saw the highest number of FIRs at 208, followed by Amritsar with 154.
Long-Term Trends
Data from the Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling from Space (CREAMS) indicates that Madhya Pradesh has accounted for over 50% of the crop residue burning cases in the last five years. This highlights the persistent challenge of stubble burning across multiple states in India, despite regulatory measures and awareness campaigns.
