Bathinda: Punjab reported 53 new farm fire cases on Saturday, bringing the total count for the season to 9,669. The district of Ferozepur emerged as the worst affected, recording the highest number of crop residue burning incidents at 916 as of May 23. It was followed by Moga with 749 cases, Bathinda with 744, Tarn Taran with 714, Amritsar with 702, Sangrur with 686, Gurdaspur with 635, Ludhiana with 622, Muktsar with 537, Fazilka with 414, Patiala with 408, Jalandhar with 390, Faridkot with 372, Mansa with 349, Barnala with 345, Kapurthala with 334, Hoshiarpur with 236, Malerkotla with 170, SBS Nagar with 135, and Fatehgarh Sahib with 119.

Legal Action Intensifies

Authorities continue to take stringent legal measures against farmers involved in stubble burning. These actions include registration of First Information Reports (FIRs), marking red entries in land records, and imposing environmental compensation. The crackdown aims to deter further incidents and curb air pollution.

Other States Report Farm Fires

On Saturday, Madhya Pradesh reported 223 farm fire cases, Uttar Pradesh recorded 27, and Haryana saw 5 crop residue burning incidents. Across the country, the total number of farm fires this season has crossed 67,000. Notably, Madhya Pradesh alone accounts for over 38,400 cases, which is more than 57 percent of the national total.
