Railway Employee Attacked by Elephant in Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: A railway employee was critically injured after being attacked by an elephant near a railway crossing in East Singhbhum district. Sanjiv Sinha, the employee, was first admitted to the Chakulia community health centre (CHC) but was later referred to a hospital in Jhargram in West Bengal, forest officials confirmed.

Sinha, a resident of Kachua in West Bengal, was posted as a lineman at the Sunsunia level crossing. The attack occurred around 11:30 am. Forester Sujit Hansda stated, “The exact cause of the incident is still being verified.” However, preliminary reports suggest that he was performing his duties when one of the elephants from a herd of about a dozen attacked him.

“The herd was crossing the railway tracks when the incident occurred. The level crossing is in a forested area where elephants frequently move across the railway line,” Hansda explained. “The matter is being investigated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the attack, especially as it occurred in broad daylight,” Hansda added.

“Bystanders mustered the courage to rescue the victim and rushed him to the CHC before alerting forest officials,” another forest official said. The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife in the region, where elephant movements are common. Stay updated with the latest Ranchi news.
