A tornado-like storm struck Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu on June 21, 2026, causing significant damage. The violent winds uprooted trees, snapped electricity poles, tore away roof sheets, and damaged household belongings, according to reports.
Rare Weather Event
Weather experts described the event as 'rarest of the rare' for the region. Weatherman Navdeep Dahiya noted, 'Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu reported #Tornado today. Very rare sight from #TamilNadu. Could be the first one from the state? In general Tornado formations are not that common in India. If happens mostly were reported from Odisha, West Bengal or northern plains.'
Dahiya also shared visuals from Thoothukudi Airport, estimating wind speeds of 170–220 km/h, comparable to an EF2 tornado on the Enhanced Fujita scale (winds of 178 km/h or more).
Local Impact and Response
Another weather observer, Tamil Nadu Weatherman (@praddy06), called it 'Rarest of the rarest' and credited the concerned for capturing the event. The storm caused widespread disruption, with authorities assessing the damage and restoring essential services.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had not officially confirmed a tornado as of June 22, but the visuals and damage patterns strongly indicate a tornado-like vortex. Tornadoes are extremely rare in Tamil Nadu, with most Indian tornadoes occurring in Odisha, West Bengal, and the northern plains.
