Southwest Monsoon Likely to Hit Andaman Islands by May 16

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 16. This development marks the beginning of the monsoon season in the region.

Low-Pressure Area Intensifies

The low-pressure area that was previously situated over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has now intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area as of Wednesday morning. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level, indicating a strong system that could influence weather patterns in the coming days.

Weather Forecast for Kerala

In the state of Kerala, residents can expect isolated heavy rainfall along with scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 30 to 50 kilometers per hour over the next few days. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for six districts on Thursday: Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. A yellow alert signifies that the weather is likely to remain adverse, and people are advised to stay cautious.

Precautions and Advisories

The IMD has urged the public, especially those in the yellow alert zones, to take necessary precautions. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along the Kerala coast until further notice. The department also recommends that residents avoid staying in vulnerable structures and keep emergency supplies ready. Travelers should check local weather updates before planning trips to hilly areas or coastal regions.

This monsoon arrival is crucial for the region's agriculture and water resources. The IMD will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the system progresses.
