Brigadier Kushal Thakur (retd), former Commanding Officer of 18 Grenadiers, has described the battles of Tololing and Tiger Hill as pivotal moments that changed the course of the 1999 Kargil War. Speaking on the occasion of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, he emphasized that the sacrifices made during the conflict continue to inspire the nation.
Turning Point of the War
According to Brigadier Thakur, the recapture of Tololing and Tiger Hill was the turning point in the Kargil conflict. These victories shifted momentum in favor of Indian forces and demonstrated the indomitable spirit of the soldiers. He paid tributes to Lt Col R Vishwanathan, Major Rajesh Adhikari, and other brave soldiers of 18 Grenadiers, stating that their courage embodied the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
Challenges Faced During the War
Brigadier Thakur recalled that the battalion fought under extremely difficult conditions, including limited intelligence and severe logistical constraints. The high-altitude terrain and enemy fortifications made the operations challenging. Despite these odds, the soldiers displayed extraordinary bravery and determination.
Comparison with Modern Warfare
Drawing a comparison between the Kargil War and modern military operations like Operation Sindoor, Thakur noted that technology has transformed warfare with drones, real-time surveillance, and precision-guided weapons. However, he asserted that human courage remains the decisive factor in any conflict. Technology can aid but not replace the valor and sacrifice of soldiers.
Emotional Memories and Message to Youth
Sharing personal memories, Brigadier Thakur recounted his final conversations with Lt Col Vishwanathan and Major Adhikari before they made the supreme sacrifice. He described seeing the Tricolour flying atop Tiger Hill on July 4, 1999, as a deeply emotional moment and a tribute to all fallen comrades.
Addressing India's youth, he urged them to understand that sacrifice and patriotism are timeless values. "Whether you join the Armed Forces or serve the nation in any other profession, always place the country before self. Let the stories of Tololing and Tiger Hill remind you of your duty towards the nation," he said.
Preserving the Legacy
Brigadier Thakur called for preserving the legacy of Kargil's heroes by including their stories in school curricula and supporting the families of martyrs. He emphasized that the nation must never forget the sacrifices made to protect its sovereignty and integrity.
