Unpredictable Weather Across India: Thunderstorms and Heatwaves

The weather in India over the coming days is set to be highly unpredictable, with thunderstorms, showers, warming, and localized heatwave conditions expected to disrupt travel plans across various regions.

Weather Systems Influencing India

According to the latest All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin released on May 5 at 8 pm, a mix of weather systems will dictate conditions over the next two weeks. A Western Disturbance is prevailing over the northern areas, while cyclonic circulations are active in central and north India.

North India: Uncertain Conditions

In North India, the situation remains uncertain. Regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to receive isolated showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 30-50 kmph on May 6. Uttarakhand will experience unsettled weather until May 8, while Rajasthan can expect isolated rains until May 9. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may reappear from May 10 to 11, potentially hampering road travel in mountainous areas and delaying train and flight services.

East and Northeast India: Heavy Rains

East and Northeast India face higher chances of precipitation. Heavy rains are predicted in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh early in the week. Continuous rains with thunderstorms and high winds are expected in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Travelers should prepare for waterlogging in urban centers and possible landslides in vulnerable hill areas.

Central India: Thunderstorms and Wind

Central India, including Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, will experience thunderstorm activity and windy conditions, especially early in the forecast period. While substantial rains may not occur, changing weather could impact highway driving and outdoor activities. Hailstorm activity has also been flagged in some areas, which could briefly intensify conditions and reduce visibility.

Southern India: Constant Rains

Southern India will see a different pattern. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and parts of Karnataka are expected to get constant rains throughout the week, with heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and interior Karnataka. Travelers may face delays and slippery conditions during evenings and nights.

Heatwave and Humid Conditions

A heatwave is possible in sporadic regions of West Rajasthan from May 9 to 11. Hot and humid conditions will prevail in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, and Gujarat, which may interfere with outdoor sightseeing.

Marine Warnings

Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into the sea in selected regions of the Bay of Bengal, particularly off Odisha and West Bengal, due to squally conditions. This warning reflects rough seas in those areas.

Travelers should stay informed about local weather advisories and plan their trips accordingly.
