Two weeks after the suspension of the house-marking exercise for the proposed Rs 2,390 crore Vishnupad Corridor project in Gaya, the deadlock between the district administration and people likely to be affected by the scheme continues.
According to sources, more than 650 houses and structures fall within the ambit of the ambitious project aimed at improving infrastructure, amenities and access around the world-famous Vishnupad temple, considered a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus. Of the total structures identified, around 400 are proposed to be demolished. Status quo has been maintained on 41 structures, including small temples, a gurdwara and several vedis where pindadan rituals are performed. These structures are proposed to be relocated outside the corridor area.
Prabandhkarni Samiti President Distances Himself
Asked about the status of the exercise, Vishnupad Mandir Prabandhkarni Samiti president Shambhu Lal Bitthal said he had no information about the matter and was no longer interested in the project. Though Bitthal did not elaborate, shrine management insiders claimed he was upset with the activities of a section of local residents allegedly trying to stall the project for personal interests.
According to insiders, several people residing in the area have allegedly constructed houses or occupied public land near the shrine. While genuine residents whose houses are acquired would receive compensation, those occupying public land face eviction without compensation if the project proceeds in its present form.
No Objections Received Yet
Earlier, while suspending the house-marking exercise, district magistrate Shashank Shubhnakar had asked stakeholders to submit objections, claims and suggestions before Gaya sadar SDM Anil Kumar Raman within two weeks. Asked whether any representation had been received, Raman said on Tuesday that no complaint or suggestion had been submitted so far.
On the status of the project, Gaya municipal commissioner Abhishek Palasia said the final decision rested with the government and local officials were awaiting directions before proceeding further with demolition and related work.
