A400M, C-390, C-130J Compete to Replace India's An-32 Fleet

The search for a successor to the Indian Air Force's ageing An-32 transport aircraft has intensified, with the Airbus A400M Atlas, Embraer C-390 Millennium, and Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules emerging as the leading candidates.

Background of the An-32 Replacement

The recent crash of an Indian Air Force An-32 in Assam's Jorhat district, which claimed five lives, has highlighted the urgent need to replace the ageing fleet. The aircraft, which crashed during a routine sortie, was unable to land on the runway and went down outside the airstrip area. Rescue operations were launched immediately.

Inducted in 1984, the Soviet-origin An-32 has been the backbone of India's tactical airlift operations for over 40 years. India remains the largest operator, with more than 100 still in service, used for logistics in high-altitude regions like Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Siachen Glacier.

Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) Programme

India and Russia had earlier launched a joint Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme in the early 2000s, but it failed to progress beyond the design stage due to differences over specifications and engine configuration. India formally withdrew from the project.

In December 2022, the IAF issued a Request for Information (RFI) to global manufacturers for aircraft with a load-carrying capacity of 18 to 30 tonnes. The Defence Acquisition Board has cleared a plan to procure 60 medium transport aircraft at an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh crore. Of these, 12 airframes will be acquired in fly-away condition, while 48 will be manufactured locally.

Top Contenders for MTA Programme

The RFI received responses from Airbus for the A400M, Lockheed Martin for the C-130J, and Embraer for the C-390. Each contender has distinct strengths.

Airbus A400M Atlas

The A400M offers a payload capacity of up to 37 tonnes, exceeding the IAF's requirement of 18-30 tonnes. Powered by four turboprop engines, it can operate at 40,000 ft. It has a range of 4,400 km with a 30-tonne payload and 6,300 km with a 20-tonne payload.

Embraer C-390 Millennium

The Brazilian C-390 is powered by two turbofan engines, cruising at Mach 0.8 (about 870 km/h), making it one of the fastest in its category. It has a maximum payload of 26 tonnes and a range of over 2,000 km with that payload. Embraer has partnered with Mahindra Defence for industrial cooperation and local manufacturing.

Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules

The IAF already operates 12 C-130Js for special operations, extensively used in high-altitude regions and on short, semi-prepared runways. It has a payload capacity of about 20 tonnes and a range of about 4,400 km with an 18-tonne payload.

Comparative Strengths

The A400M offers the highest payload and longest range among the three. The C-390 stands out for its jet-powered design and higher cruise speed. The C-130J benefits from a proven operational record with the IAF and a reputation for operating from short and high-altitude airstrips.

The selection process will consider these strengths along with cost, industrial cooperation, and local manufacturing proposals.
