Akola in Maharashtra recorded the highest temperature in India at 46.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday, as a severe heatwave gripped parts of the country. Kerala also continued to reel under intense heat, with several districts reporting temperatures above normal.
Heatwave in Vidarbha
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heat wave conditions are expected to persist across parts of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region till Tuesday. Maximum temperatures may reach 45 to 46 degrees Celsius, and could touch 47 degrees Celsius at isolated locations.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, and other districts, advising residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. The scorching heat has led to an increase in demand for electricity and water in the region.
Kerala Reels Under Heat
Meanwhile, Kerala is also experiencing intense heat, with temperatures soaring above normal in many parts. The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions may continue in the state for the next few days. The state government has advised people to stay indoors during peak hours and stay hydrated.
The heatwave has affected daily life, with schools in some districts adjusting timings. Health authorities have reported a rise in cases of heatstroke and dehydration.
Experts attribute the extreme temperatures to a combination of factors, including lack of pre-monsoon showers and high pressure over the region. Residents are urged to follow safety guidelines issued by the IMD and local authorities.
