The first glimpse of the revered ice lingam of Baba Barfani at the holy Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir has been revealed, marking the beginning of preparations for the annual Amarnath Yatra in 2026. The sacred formation, which naturally takes shape inside the cave, is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva and attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad.
Significance of the Ice Lingam
The ice stalagmite, known as the Shivling or Baba Barfani, is believed to represent Lord Shiva. It forms naturally over the winter months and melts as the season changes. The first sighting of the lingam is considered an auspicious event, and this year it was captured on camera by officials of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). The video shows the pristine white ice structure glistening inside the cave, surrounded by snow-covered mountains.
Preparations for the Yatra
The SASB has already begun preparations for the 2026 yatra, which is expected to commence in late June and conclude in August. The board is working on improving infrastructure, including trekking routes, helicopter services, and medical facilities. Security arrangements are also being reviewed in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir administration and security forces to ensure a safe pilgrimage.
- Trekking Routes: The traditional Pahalgam and Baltal routes will be maintained, with additional rest stops and sanitation facilities.
- Helicopter Services: More helicopter sorties are planned to reduce travel time for elderly and disabled pilgrims.
- Medical Facilities: Temporary hospitals and first-aid posts will be set up along the route and at the base camps.
Devotees' Excitement
News of the ice lingam's appearance has sparked enthusiasm among devotees. Many have expressed their desire to undertake the arduous journey to seek blessings. Social media is abuzz with videos and photos of the sacred formation, with hashtags like #AmarnathYatra2026 and #BabaBarfani trending. Pilgrims are advised to register online and stay updated on weather conditions and route advisories.
Historical Context
The Amarnath Yatra has been a tradition for centuries, with references in ancient texts. The cave, located at an altitude of 3,888 meters, is one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The yatra was temporarily suspended in 2025 due to security concerns but has been resumed this year with enhanced safety measures.
As the pilgrimage season approaches, the first glimpse of Baba Barfani serves as a spiritual call for devotees to begin their preparations. The SASB expects over 500,000 pilgrims this year, a significant increase from previous years, reflecting the enduring faith in Lord Shiva.
