A 1.5-kilometer section of the Anna Salai flyover from Saidapet to CIT Nagar has been completed, providing significant relief for commuters in Chennai. This milestone marks major progress in the long-pending project aimed at easing traffic congestion on one of the city's busiest routes.
Progress on Piers and Spans
Over 50 of the 91 piers have been installed, and pre-fabricated spans brought from Mumbai and Gujarat have been placed. This has accelerated the construction of the elevated corridor, bringing the project closer to completion.
Road Approach and Surface Works
An 80-metre asphalt approach road has been built from Saidapet, followed by a concrete stretch up to CIT Nagar. This improvement enhances connectivity and prepares the route for further flyover integration.
Challenges on the Nandanam–Teynampet Side
Work on the Nandanam to Teynampet stretch is still at the pillar stage. Officials indicate that visible progress may take another four months, following recent utility shifting work that had delayed construction.
Complex Construction Over Metro Corridor
Around 69 of the 91 pillars are being built above the metro corridor, using its foundation support designed to withstand heavy loads. This allows seamless integration of both transport infrastructures, optimizing space and structural integrity.
Steel Girders and Deck Slab Installation
Work is underway to install steel girders and concrete deck slabs for the 3.2-kilometer, four-lane flyover. The project will use approximately 15,000 tonnes of steel and cost Rs 621 crore, reflecting its scale and ambition.
Traffic Relief and Remaining Concerns
Barricades have been removed in parts, and U-turns have been added to improve traffic flow. However, diversions through Teynampet and T Nagar are still causing congestion. Residents are urging faster completion of the pending sections to fully realize the flyover's benefits.
