Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting, scheduled for Friday. The meeting will bring together the top diplomats of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) nations—Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.
Key Agenda Items
The discussions are expected to focus on regional security challenges, including the situation in the Indo-Pacific, maritime security, and cooperation in emerging technologies. The ministers will also review progress on Quad initiatives such as vaccine production, critical and emerging technology, climate action, and infrastructure development.
Bilateral Meetings
On the sidelines of the Quad meeting, Foreign Minister Wong is likely to hold bilateral talks with her Indian counterpart, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The two ministers are expected to discuss ways to enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Australia and India, including trade, investment, defense, and people-to-people ties.
Significance of the Meeting
This Quad meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad has emerged as a key grouping for promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific. The ministers are expected to issue a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to democratic values, rule of law, and a rules-based international order.
Australia-India Relations
Australia and India have strengthened their bilateral relationship in recent years, with both countries sharing strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific. The two nations have been cooperating closely on defense, counter-terrorism, and maritime security. The Quad meeting provides an opportunity to further deepen these ties.
The Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting will be followed by the Quad Leaders' Summit later this year, which is expected to be hosted by Japan.
