A prominent Baloch activist has strongly condemned Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo for allegedly issuing threats against intellectuals and PhD scholars in the province. The activist accused the CM of attempting to stifle dissenting voices and suppress academic freedom.
Allegations of Intimidation
Speaking at a press conference in Quetta, the activist claimed that the chief minister's recent statements were aimed at intimidating scholars who speak out on social and political issues. He asserted that such tactics are reminiscent of authoritarian regimes and undermine the principles of democracy.
Response from the Chief Minister's Office
Officials from the CM's office have denied the allegations, stating that the chief minister respects all intellectuals and scholars. They emphasized that the government is committed to providing a safe environment for academic discourse.
The activist called on the federal government and human rights organizations to intervene and ensure the protection of scholars in Balochistan. He warned that continued threats could lead to a brain drain and further destabilize the region.
This incident has sparked a broader debate on the state of academic freedom in Pakistan, with many civil society groups expressing solidarity with the scholars.
