The Bangladesh government has issued a directive to protect a buffalo named after former United States President Donald Trump, ensuring it is spared from the ritual sacrifice during Eid al-Adha. The animal, which gained fame for its name, will now receive VIP treatment at a local zoo.
Government Intervention
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock ordered the buffalo be taken to the Dhaka Zoo, where it will be housed in a special enclosure. Officials stated the decision was made to honor the sentiments of those who named the buffalo after Trump, as well as to promote animal welfare.
Background
The buffalo, owned by a farmer in the Netrokona district, was originally intended for sale during Eid. However, after news spread of its name, animal rights activists and local politicians petitioned the government to intervene. The farmer agreed to hand over the buffalo for a compensation of 200,000 Bangladeshi Taka.
Zoo Arrangements
Dhaka Zoo authorities have prepared a separate area for the buffalo, complete with a pond and shade. A veterinarian will monitor its health regularly. The zoo director said, "This buffalo is now a symbol of compassion and will be treated with the utmost care."
Reactions
The decision has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters praise the government for its humane approach, while critics argue resources could be better used for other animals. The buffalo's owner expressed relief, stating, "I am happy it will live peacefully."
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, involves the slaughter of animals such as goats, sheep, and cows to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son. This incident highlights the intersection of tradition, animal rights, and political symbolism.
