Bengaluru Overtakes Mumbai in Domestic Air Traffic Battle

Bengaluru airport has overtaken Mumbai in domestic passenger traffic for April, according to data from the Airports Authority of India. Kempegowda International Airport handled 3.28 million domestic passengers, compared to Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport which recorded 2.89 million. This marks a significant shift in India's aviation landscape, with Bengaluru emerging as the second-busiest domestic airport in the country.

Mumbai Retains Overall Lead

Despite losing the domestic edge, Mumbai remains the second-busiest airport overall due to stronger international traffic. In April, Mumbai handled approximately 4 million total passengers, while Bengaluru recorded 3.68 million. Mumbai's international passenger volume continues to be a key differentiator, keeping it ahead in total numbers.

Historical Context

Bengaluru had briefly overtaken Mumbai in domestic passenger traffic during the Covid-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, but this is the first sustained lead in recent times. The current data reflects a structural shift in domestic aviation dynamics.

Challenges for Mumbai

Mumbai's single-runway system has led to slot saturation, limiting its ability to expand domestic operations. This constraint has allowed Bengaluru to capture a larger share of domestic traffic. Incremental growth from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is now being absorbed by the newly operational Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is expected to handle more flights and passengers than Mumbai airport by the early to mid-2030s.

Traffic Trends

Mumbai recorded a 12% year-on-year decline in domestic passenger traffic in April, while Bengaluru saw only a marginal 0.8% drop. This sharper decline in Mumbai highlights the impact of capacity constraints and shifting demand patterns. Bengaluru's steady growth momentum underscores its rising importance as a domestic aviation hub.

Future Outlook

With Navi Mumbai airport set to expand operations, the Mumbai region is expected to regain some domestic traffic share in the coming years. However, Bengaluru's infrastructure and growth trajectory suggest it will remain a strong competitor. The battle for domestic air traffic is likely to intensify as both cities invest in capacity expansion.
