A tragic bus accident in Hungary has left one person dead and 23 others injured. The bus was transporting a group of young athletes when it crashed on a highway near Budapest on Tuesday morning.
Details of the Accident
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. local time on the M1 motorway, a major route connecting Budapest to Vienna. According to police reports, the bus veered off the road and overturned for reasons still under investigation. The driver, a 52-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Among the 23 injured, three are in critical condition and have been airlifted to nearby hospitals.
Victims and Response
The athletes, aged between 14 and 18, were from a local sports club traveling to a competition. Emergency services, including multiple ambulances and fire trucks, responded promptly. The injured were taken to hospitals in Budapest and Gyor. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with initial reports suggesting possible mechanical failure or driver error.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "Our hearts go out to the families of the victims. We are doing everything to ensure the injured receive the best care." The sports club has canceled all upcoming events as a mark of respect.
This accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Hungary, where highway accidents have increased by 5% this year. The government has pledged to review safety measures on the M1 motorway.
