Cachar Police Seize 10,000 Yaba Tablets, Heroin in River Op

In a joint operation, the Cachar police and Assam Rifles have seized 10,000 Yaba tablets and 21 grams of heroin from a mechanized boat intercepted near Lakhipur in southern Assam, officials confirmed on Saturday. Two suspected drug peddlers were arrested during the operation, which has exposed the Barak river route as a fresh corridor for narcotics trafficking.

Details of the Operation

The accused have been identified as Jame El Malsam and Kenyorjor. The operation was carried out under the Lakhipur police station area after security personnel intercepted an engine-powered boat moving along the Barak river on Friday evening. Speaking to the media, DSP (Cachar) Dilraj Pathak stated that the heroin was concealed in two soap cases and weighed approximately 21 grams. In addition to the narcotics, police also seized three mobile phones and the boat used for transportation.

Market Value and Investigation

The estimated market value of the seized contraband is several crores of rupees. Pathak emphasized that the operation is part of an intensified crackdown against drug trafficking networks operating in the district and adjoining areas. The two arrested individuals are currently being interrogated to determine whether a larger inter-state or cross-border smuggling network is involved.

Riverine Routes Under Scrutiny

Investigators suspect that riverine routes along the Barak are increasingly being used by traffickers to evade highway checks and security surveillance. This seizure highlights the need for enhanced vigilance on waterways to combat drug trafficking effectively.
