Cyprus has reaffirmed its support for India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The announcement was made during a high-level meeting between the two nations, where they also unveiled plans to establish a joint task force focused on shipping infrastructure and economic cooperation.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The decision underscores the growing strategic partnership between India and Cyprus. Both countries have emphasized the importance of multilateralism and reforms in global governance institutions. Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has consistently backed India's candidacy for a permanent UNSC seat, citing India's global role and contributions to peacekeeping.
Joint Task Force on Shipping
The joint task force will explore opportunities in shipping infrastructure, including port development, maritime logistics, and connectivity. This initiative aims to boost trade and investment flows between the two nations. Cyprus, a major shipping hub in the Mediterranean, offers expertise in maritime services, while India provides a vast market and growing port infrastructure.
Economic Cooperation
Both sides agreed to enhance economic collaboration in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and renewable energy. They also discussed ways to facilitate business exchanges and investment protection. The bilateral trade volume has been steadily increasing, and the new measures are expected to further strengthen economic ties.
Strategic Dialogue
The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Indo-Pacific region, and counterterrorism efforts. They reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order and peaceful resolution of disputes.
India and Cyprus have enjoyed warm relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1960. The recent developments mark a significant step forward in deepening their multifaceted partnership.
