In a tragic turn of events, rescue teams have successfully retrieved the bodies of eight victims from the recent mishap in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh. The accident, which occurred earlier this week, has left the region in mourning as authorities intensify search operations for any remaining missing persons.
Details of the Operation
The retrieval operation was carried out by a joint team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police. Despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, the teams managed to recover the bodies over the past 24 hours. Officials confirmed that the victims include both men and women, though their identities are yet to be officially released pending family notification.
Cause of the Accident
Preliminary investigations suggest that the mishap was caused by a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in the region. The victims were reportedly traveling in a vehicle when the incident occurred. Local authorities have urged caution among residents and travelers as the monsoon season continues to pose risks in hilly areas.
Government Response
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin. He also directed officials to expedite the rescue and relief operations. The state government has assured full support to the affected families.
Search Operations Ongoing
While eight bodies have been recovered, reports indicate that a few individuals remain missing. Search teams are scouring the area with the help of sniffer dogs and advanced equipment. District authorities have set up a control room to coordinate efforts and provide updates to the public.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of mountainous regions to natural disasters. Experts emphasize the need for better infrastructure and early warning systems to prevent such losses in the future.
