A Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus carrying passengers had a terrifyingly close call on Wednesday afternoon when a wild elephant suddenly blocked the road and aggressively attacked the vehicle along a forested stretch near Achankovil. The incident occurred around noon, sending shockwaves through the local community and highlighting the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the region.
Sudden Roadblock and Aggressive Confrontation
The bus was en route from Punalur to Achankovil, traveling along the Alimukku–Achankovil route through the scenic but potentially hazardous forest area. As it approached the Chittar Thura section under the Konni forest division, a large elephant—a familiar presence in these parts—unexpectedly stepped onto the road directly in front of the moving vehicle.
Driver Bijumon, following the urgent instructions of conductor Unnikrishnan, immediately brought the bus to a complete halt to avoid a collision. The sudden appearance of the massive animal left all onboard startled and anxious. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, the driver cautiously began to reverse the bus, hoping to create distance from the elephant.
Panic Ensues as Elephant Charges and Strikes Bus
Unfortunately, this maneuver seemed to provoke the elephant further. Without warning, the animal charged directly at the stationary bus, using its powerful tusks to strike the vehicle's body. Authorities suspect the animal might have been agitated or provoked shortly before the bus encounter. Preliminary theories suggest that motorbike riders who passed along the same route just ahead of the KSRTC bus could have unintentionally disturbed or threatened the elephant, putting it in a defensive and aggressive state.
