Dehradun witnessed severe traffic disruptions on Thursday evening after heavy rains caused several trees to collapse along Rajpur Road. The entire stretch experienced significant congestion, prompting authorities to divert vehicles towards Canal Road.
Incident Details
Commuters reported fallen trees at multiple locations, including opposite Rashtrapati Niketan, near Mussoorie diversion, SSP residence, Brahmkamal Chowk, and several other spots. A police booth at Brahmkamal Chowk also collapsed due to the storm. In Garhi Cantt and along Supply Road, fallen trees and broken branches further obstructed traffic movement.
One commuter posted on social media, “The traffic was blocked all the way from Jakhan till Clock Tower due to the collapsed trees and had to be directed from one side.”
Impact on Residents
Protesters in Ekta Vihar reported that the storm destroyed their tents. Power outages were also reported from the Rajpur and Malsi areas, which are expected to last until Friday.
Official Response
Lokjeet Singh, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), stated, “At least four trees collapsed at different points. Traffic was diverted in the late evening but the debris was cleared by night and traffic movement resumed gradually.” Officials confirmed that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) also assisted in clearing the collapsed trees on Rajpur Road.
