A tragic incident occurred near Mantralayam on Saturday afternoon when five individuals, including a five-year-old boy, were swept away by the powerful currents of the Tungabhadra River while swimming. The group, consisting of around 10 family members and relatives, had come to attend a family function and a Satyanarayana Puja. After the group reached the river, six individuals ventured into the water while the others remained on the bank. Within moments, all six were caught in the strong currents after misjudging the water depth.
Survivor and Victims
Aparna from Adoni managed to escape miraculously, but the other five were washed away and are feared to have drowned. The deceased have been identified as Satish (35) and Yuvan Chandra (5) from Hyderabad, Raghavendra (25) and Dhanu (23) from Mantralayam, and Sandhya (22) from Uravakonda.
Rescue Operations
Upon receiving an alert from relatives on the shore, Mantralayam police, led by Circle Inspector Dasthagiri, rushed to the scene with expert swimmers and launched a rescue operation. Local fishermen familiar with the river terrain also joined the efforts. However, no bodies had been recovered as of late Saturday. Police stated that rescue operations would continue throughout the night.
