In a remarkable wildlife incident, a lost chausinga fawn, also known as the four-horned antelope, found an unusual temporary family among a flock of sheep in Telangana. The event unfolded in the Medaram area of Mulugu district, as confirmed by forest officials on Friday.
An Unlikely Companion in the Flock
The young antelope, having become separated from its mother, wandered into the midst of a sheep herd. The fawn then followed the domestic animals into a nearby village, creating a surprising spectacle. Alert local residents quickly noticed the unusual animal moving with the sheep and did not hesitate to inform the forest department about the strange visitor.
Swift Action by Forest Officials
Acting promptly on the alert, forest department personnel located the herd and successfully rescued the vulnerable fawn. The principal chief conservator of forests and acting chief wildlife warden for Telangana, C Suvarna, stated that the chausinga was immediately separated from the sheep to ensure its safety.
Under careful veterinary supervision, the fawn was transported to Warangal Zoo for professional care. "The animal is currently under observation and receiving the necessary care," Suvarna added, highlighting the department's commitment to the protected species' wellbeing.
Protected Species Given Priority
Officials emphasized that the swift rescue operation was critical to prevent any stress or potential injury to the young antelope. They reminded the public that the chausinga (Tetracerus quadricornis) is a protected species under India's wildlife laws. This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with forest authorities in safeguarding the nation's precious biodiversity.
The successful rescue in Mulugu district demonstrates effective coordination between aware citizens and dedicated forest staff, ensuring a positive outcome for the rare four-horned antelope.
