Caroline von Rantzau, a 26-year-old heiress to the million-dollar German shipping firm DAL, was discovered dead under mysterious circumstances at her family's luxury safari lodge in Limpopo province, northern South Africa. Her death occurred one day after the family's financial manager was killed on the same property.
Details of the Incident
According to German newspaper Bild, gunshots were heard on the estate on June 1, and von Rantzau was found with a gunshot wound. Police suspect she was shot with a .357 caliber hunting rifle, the same type of weapon owned by her father, Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau, which was kept in his gun cabinet.
On May 31, the family estate's financial manager, 44-year-old Arno Koën, was found dead on the property, killed by a 9mm gunshot.
Autopsy and Investigation
South African Police Services spokeswoman Malesela Ledwaba stated, "The results of the autopsy will give investigators information about the actual causes of death and will determine whether investigations will be launched against other persons." No suspects have been identified, and no others are currently under investigation.
Initial Reports Contradicted
The mystery deepened as initial reports claimed von Rantzau had died in a car accident, but later evidence pointed to a shooting. Koën, who was a mentor and foster father to von Rantzau, managed bookings and finances at the estate. Von Rantzau had recently begun building an impressive real estate portfolio, having purchased two properties near the Mozambique border in the untamed South African province.
Family Background
Von Rantzau spent her time caring for animals at the family estate, which houses antelope, horses, wildebeest, impalas, mongoose, monitors, and birds. DAL, the family shipping company, sold its container liner business to Hapag-Lloyd in 2022 and remains a leading brand in chemical tankers across Europe. Dr. Eberhart von Rantzau represents the third generation of family ownership of the company, founded by John T Essberger in 1924.
Authorities have yet to explain the events, and the investigation continues.
