Goa CM Inaugurates Restored 17th-Century Sanquelim Fort

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday inaugurated the restored 17th-century Sanquelim Fort in Bicholim, a historic structure built by the Sawant Bhonsles, the rulers of Sawantwadi. The fort had remained neglected for years before the restoration.

Restoration and Cost

The restoration was carried out by the Department of Archaeology at a cost of Rs 3 crore. This initiative is part of the state government’s broader effort to preserve and revive heritage sites across Goa.

CM’s Vision for the Fort

Speaking at the inauguration, Sawant said the government has prioritised the conservation of structures with historical significance. He also announced plans to establish centres of the National School of Drama and the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts at the fort. “The fort will become a hub for theatre, arts and cultural preservation,” Sawant stated.

He added that while Sanquelim has not traditionally been a major tourist destination, the restored fort is expected to attract visitors and history enthusiasts alike.

Facilities at the Fort

The renovated complex features a landscaped garden, a library, a recreation centre for senior citizens, and a small restaurant. These amenities aim to enhance the visitor experience and promote cultural engagement.

The restoration marks a significant step in preserving Goa’s rich history and promoting heritage tourism in the region.
