Heavy rainfall over the past two days has caused significant damage to houses and disrupted road connectivity across Udupi district in Karnataka. The downpour, which began on Monday, has led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, with several villages experiencing flooding.
Damage to Properties
According to district officials, at least 15 houses have been partially damaged, while two houses have collapsed completely. The affected families have been moved to safer locations, and relief camps have been set up in some areas. The Udupi district administration has announced compensation for the affected families, with an initial assessment of the damage underway.
Road Connectivity Affected
Several roads in the district have been submerged or damaged, disrupting vehicular movement. The Mangaluru-Udupi highway has been particularly affected, with waterlogging at multiple points. Traffic on the highway was diverted, and motorists faced long delays. The Public Works Department has deployed teams to clear debris and restore connectivity.
In rural areas, many village roads have become impassable, cutting off access to essential services. School and college closures have been announced in some parts of the district as a precautionary measure.
Meteorological Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Udupi and neighboring districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, and residents in low-lying areas have been urged to move to safer places.
Relief Measures
The district administration has opened control rooms to coordinate relief operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been kept on standby. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and have urged residents to report any emergencies to the toll-free helpline numbers.
In the wake of the damage, the government has announced ex-gratia payments to families who lost their homes. The deputy commissioner of Udupi district has assured that all necessary assistance will be provided to those affected.
