Heavy rain on Friday brought Bengaluru's south and Central Business District (CBD) areas to a standstill, with widespread waterlogging exposing the city's civic apathy. The downpour, which began in the afternoon, led to overflowing storm water drains (SWDs), tree falls, and massive traffic snarls, causing misery and mayhem for residents.
Waterlogged Roads and Overflowing Drains
Several key roads in south Bengaluru and the CBD, including Sampangiramanagara Main Road, were submerged under knee-deep water. Commuters faced harrowing experiences as vehicles broke down and pedestrians struggled to navigate the flooded streets. The overflow of SWDs added to the chaos, with dirty water mixing with rainwater and creating unhygienic conditions.
Tree Falls and Traffic Jams
The heavy rain also triggered multiple tree falls across the city, blocking roads and damaging vehicles. Traffic police struggled to manage the situation as vehicles were diverted, leading to long jams on major arteries. Residents took to social media to vent their frustration, tagging civic authorities and demanding immediate action.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain in the coming days, raising concerns about further waterlogging. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has deployed teams to clear blocked drains and remove fallen trees, but the response has been criticized as slow and inadequate.
Civic Apathy Exposed
The recurring waterlogging in Bengaluru highlights the failure of civic agencies to address the city's drainage issues despite repeated complaints. Experts point to encroachments on storm water drains, poor maintenance, and unplanned urbanization as key reasons for the problem. Citizens have demanded long-term solutions, including the restoration of natural water bodies and stricter enforcement of regulations.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of the rain, many are left wondering if the authorities will take proactive measures before the next downpour. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for better urban planning and infrastructure management in Bengaluru.
