Indore: Rain and thunderstorms have brought a cooler start to June in Indore, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that this respite will be temporary. The monthly outlook from the weather department suggests that the first half of June will remain comparatively pleasant, with temperatures near or below normal due to increased cloud cover and weather disturbances.
First Week of June: Active Pre-Monsoon Showers
Met officials have forecast intermittent pre-monsoonal rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds during the first week of June. Some parts of the Indore division may also experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm activity. These conditions are expected to provide temporary relief from the rising temperatures observed over the past few weeks.
Second Week: Continued Comfort
The second week of June is likely to remain comfortable, with temperatures hovering around normal levels and occasional light rain continuing across the region. Arun Sharma, a scientist at IMD Bhopal, stated, “The first two weeks of June for Indore and nearby areas will witness near and below normal temperatures with clouding and thunderstorms due to a western disturbance affecting the region.”
Latter Half of June: Warmer and Drier
The monthly forecast presents a contrasting picture for the latter half of June. While the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Indore around its normal schedule, after June 15, the city may still experience above-normal temperatures during the third and fourth weeks. The IMD has also forecast that overall rainfall in June is likely to remain below normal, despite the anticipated onset of the monsoon. This means rain activity could be less frequent and less intense than typical for the month. Sharma added, “As per the forecast, rain activity is likely in the coming days, but overall rain during June is expected to remain below normal. Temperature may also stay above normal despite the expected monsoon onset.”
Pre-Monsoon Rain Brings Relief
Pre-monsoon activity on Tuesday evening brought much-needed relief from intense heat and humidity in Indore, as strong winds and rain lashed the city. Following Monday’s storm and showers, the night temperature dropped sharply from 26 degrees Celsius to 22.1 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature settled at 38.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Winds gusting up to 81 kmph swept across the city, accompanied by heavy rain in several areas. The strong winds also disrupted power supply, leaving many localities without electricity for hours.
Outlook for the Coming Days
Met officials forecast similar weather conditions over the next three to four days, with chances of rain and strong winds continuing under the influence of a trough line and western disturbance. The IMD also indicated that the southwest monsoon might arrive in Madhya Pradesh a few days later than usual, though ongoing pre-monsoon showers are expected to keep temperatures in check.
