The India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) still holds significant opportunities, and the I2U2 grouping should not be considered dead, according to Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, the Israeli envoy to India. In a recent statement, she emphasized that despite geopolitical challenges, the strategic importance of these initiatives remains intact.
IMEC Corridor: A Vision for Connectivity
The IMEC corridor, announced during the G20 summit in New Delhi in September 2023, aims to enhance connectivity between India, the Middle East, and Europe. The project involves the construction of rail lines, ports, and digital infrastructure to facilitate trade and energy flows. Hassan-Nahoum noted that while there have been delays due to the conflict in Gaza, the underlying vision remains strong. She stated, "The IMEC corridor is a long-term project that still holds immense opportunities for all participating nations."
I2U2: A Platform for Cooperation
The I2U2 grouping, comprising India, Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates, was formed in 2021 to focus on joint investments in areas such as water, energy, transport, space, health, and food security. The envoy dismissed speculation that the group has become inactive, saying, "I2U2 is very much alive. We have ongoing projects and are exploring new avenues of collaboration." She highlighted that the group's work on food security and technology transfer continues to progress.
Hassan-Nahoum also addressed concerns about the impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict on regional diplomacy. She acknowledged that the war has created challenges but stressed that it has not derailed the broader strategic partnerships. "The conflict is a temporary setback, but the foundations of these initiatives are solid. We are committed to moving forward," she added.
India-Israel Relations: A Growing Partnership
The envoy praised the strengthening ties between India and Israel, noting that bilateral trade and cooperation have expanded significantly in recent years. She pointed to collaborations in agriculture, water management, and cybersecurity as examples of successful partnerships. "India and Israel share a common vision for innovation and development. Our relationship is not just about trade; it is about shared values and mutual benefit," she said.
Looking ahead, Hassan-Nahoum expressed optimism about the potential for new projects under both IMEC and I2U2. She called on stakeholders to remain engaged and to continue working towards the realization of these ambitious goals. "The opportunities are there. We just need to seize them with determination and foresight," she concluded.
