India on Saturday paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman, the former Bangladeshi president, on his 45th death anniversary, highlighting his ‘inspiring’ role in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka organized a commemorative event to honor Zia’s contributions to the birth of Bangladesh.
Ziaur Rahman’s Role in 1971
At the time of the liberation war, Ziaur Rahman was a serving major in the Pakistan Army. On March 27, 1971, he made a historic announcement over the radio, proclaiming Bangladesh’s independence on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding father. This act is widely regarded as a pivotal moment in the struggle for independence.
