At least 28 people have died and crops have been destroyed in several districts of Uttar Pradesh following a severe rain and storm that lashed the state over the past two days. The natural calamity has caused widespread devastation, with reports of damage to property and infrastructure in multiple regions.
Loss of Lives and Property
The fatalities were reported from districts including Agra, Aligarh, Firozabad, Mainpuri, and others. Many of the victims were killed due to lightning strikes, wall collapses, and uprooted trees. The state government has confirmed that relief operations are underway, and compensation of Rs 4 lakh each has been announced for the families of the deceased.
In addition to the loss of lives, the storm has caused extensive damage to standing crops, particularly wheat and mustard, which were ready for harvest. Farmers in several districts have reported significant losses, raising concerns about their livelihoods.
Government Response
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the incident and directed officials to expedite relief and rescue operations. He has also instructed district magistrates to assess the damage and provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Additionally, compensation will be provided for damage to houses and livestock as per the norms.
Weather Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain and thunderstorms in parts of Uttar Pradesh over the next 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued for several districts, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Authorities have urged people to take precautions and follow safety guidelines during the adverse weather conditions. The state disaster response force has been kept on standby for any emergency.
The severe weather has also disrupted normal life, with power outages and road blockages reported in many areas. The government has assured that restoration work is being carried out on a war footing.
