India and the Netherlands have agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte. The two leaders signed 17 agreements covering diverse sectors such as defense, water management, agriculture, and innovation.
Strategic Partnership Details
The strategic partnership aims to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including security, trade, and sustainable development. Both sides emphasized the importance of a rules-based international order and committed to working together on global challenges like climate change and terrorism.

- Water Management: Joint projects in river basin management, flood control, and water purification technologies.

Trade and Investment
Bilateral trade between India and the Netherlands currently stands at over $12 billion annually. The new agreements are expected to boost investment flows, particularly in infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech sectors. The Netherlands is India's third-largest trading partner in the European Union.
Global Cooperation
Both leaders discussed regional and global issues, including the situation in Afghanistan, the Indo-Pacific region, and the European security landscape. They reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The visit also saw the launch of a Netherlands-India Strategic Water Partnership, aiming to address water challenges through shared expertise and technology. Additionally, a joint working group on defense will be established to facilitate regular consultations and joint exercises.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
The leaders welcomed the growing cultural exchanges and diaspora contributions. A new agreement on migration and mobility will facilitate easier travel for students, professionals, and researchers between the two countries.
Prime Minister Modi thanked the Netherlands for its support in India's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and for facilitating the return of Indian students stranded in Ukraine. The two sides also agreed to collaborate on healthcare and pharmaceutical supply chains.
