India's Aviation Ministry on High Alert as Middle East Tensions Disrupt Flights

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) in India has conducted a comprehensive assessment of aviation preparedness in response to the escalating situation in the Middle East and its potential impact on international flight operations. This proactive review comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent military actions, which have already led to significant disruptions in air travel from India to Gulf destinations.

High-Level Review and Coordination Efforts

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia led a detailed review of preparedness and response arrangements, coordinating with all relevant stakeholders. A high-level meeting was held via video conference, including the Secretary of MoCA, senior ministry officials, representatives from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), airline operators, and major airport operators.

Discussions focused on maintaining passenger safety, ensuring uninterrupted operations, and strengthening real-time coordination. This is crucial given multiple airspace restrictions and NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) issued across parts of the Middle East, as highlighted in a release by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Operational Readiness and Safety Measures

Indian airlines operating overseas routes have been instructed to closely monitor airspace advisories, NOTAM notifications, and routing restrictions issued by concerned authorities. Carriers are directed to implement timely rerouting or diversions where necessary, strictly adhering to international safety standards and established contingency procedures.

Airports across India, particularly major international hubs, have been placed on heightened operational readiness. This includes preparations to handle possible flight diversions, emergency landings, and passenger support needs. The AAI and private airport operators have been asked to enhance coordination with airlines regarding ground handling arrangements, aircraft parking, passenger services, crew management, and immigration assistance when required.

The DGCA has been advised to maintain close engagement with airlines to ensure compliance with safety norms, crew duty-time regulations, and operational instructions. Continuous monitoring systems are to remain active to track changing airspace conditions and prevent any knock-on effects on domestic flight schedules.

Flight Disruptions and Airline Responses

Flight services from airports in Kerala to Gulf destinations were notably disrupted, with several carriers cancelling operations due to the ongoing tensions. Separate passenger advisories were issued by Cochin International Airport Limited, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd, Kannur International Airport Limited, and authorities at Calicut International Airport, cautioning travellers about possible cancellations and delays.

At Kochi’s Cochin International Airport, officials reported cancellations of several evening and late-night IndiGo services to Doha, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi. An Air India Express flight to Sharjah was delayed, while an Oman Air service from Kochi to Muscat returned to the airport after departure. An Etihad Airways flight from Kochi to Abu Dhabi also experienced delays, and an IndiGo flight from Dubai to Kochi was cancelled.

IndiGo released a travel advisory stating it is closely observing developments across the Middle East, including the situation involving Iran and surrounding airspace. The airline assured passengers that teams are monitoring in real time and prepared to implement necessary steps based on changing conditions.

Air India announced the suspension of flights to all Middle East destinations, citing the developing situation and a commitment to safety. Similarly, Qatar Airways confirmed a temporary suspension of flights to and from Doha following the closure of Qatari airspace, with efforts to support impacted passengers and resume operations when possible.

Passenger Guidance and External Coordination

Passengers have been urged to remain in contact with their respective airlines for the latest travel updates and schedule changes. Airlines have been instructed to keep travellers informed in advance about delays, rerouting, or diversions to minimize inconvenience.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is working in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure smooth information sharing and appropriate action if any urgent requirements arise involving Indian carriers or Indian nationals overseas. This collaborative approach aims to safeguard interests and maintain operational integrity during this period of uncertainty.
