India and the United States are deepening their collaboration in the nuclear energy sector, with New Delhi pursuing two primary objectives: rapidly scaling up nuclear power generation and establishing a manufacturing ecosystem for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). These discussions are taking place during a high-level visit by an American nuclear industry delegation, which is engaging with Union ministers, state governments, and major Indian corporations.
Rising electricity demand drives nuclear push
As India's electricity demand surges due to growth in artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, logistics, and industrial expansion, policymakers are increasingly viewing nuclear energy as essential for providing stable, 24/7 base-load power. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed the state's ambition to become a major hub for next-generation nuclear projects and SMR technology.
SHANTI Act opens door for private participation
The talks have gained momentum following the passage of the SHANTI Act 2025, which has opened India's tightly controlled nuclear sector to greater private participation. India aims to strengthen its indigenous manufacturing capabilities while also seeking foreign expertise and investment in advanced nuclear technologies.
Major Indian companies, including Reliance Industries, Adani Group, Tata Power, JSW Energy, and Larsen & Toubro, are expected to engage with the visiting American delegation. India is positioning nuclear energy at the center of its future industrial and strategic plans.
