Indian-American CEO says he wouldn't move to US now at 25

Indian-American entrepreneur Srini Madala, who arrived in the United States in 1986 and later founded three successful startups, has stated that he would not choose to come to the US if he were 25 today. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle about the evolving concept of the American Dream, Madala remarked, "If I were 25 again and had the same opportunities, I would not come to the US."

Changing Perspectives on the American Dream

The San Francisco Chronicle report highlighted several Indian-Americans who contributed to Silicon Valley's success and asked whether they would still relocate to the US under current circumstances. Many of them arrived in the US at a time when they were often the only Indians present at board meetings in Silicon Valley. However, the landscape has shifted, and so has the definition of the American Dream.

Srini Madala's Background

Madala came to the US for higher education after earning a degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, and a diploma in industrial engineering from the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (now IIM Mumbai). In the US, he attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors at KQED, a nonprofit public media organization in San Francisco, and was a Site and Architecture Commissioner for the city of Monte Sereno.

Philanthropic Work

Beyond business, Madala has engaged in philanthropy both in the US and India. He supports multiple charitable activities, including personal contributions to nonprofits focused on health, education, and entrepreneurship. He conceived and helped create the Center for Community Development in Varni, Nizamabad District, Telangana, targeting a population of 500,000 across a 300-square-mile rural area. As a Charter Member of TiE Silicon Valley, he mentored aspiring entrepreneurs. In 2025, Madala donated $100,000 to his alma mater, IIM Mumbai.
