Indian-American Couple's $5.5M Donation Shuns Publicity

Sunita Agarwal and her husband Brij Agarwal prefer to keep their philanthropic activities away from the public eye. However, the Indian-American couple's $5.5 million donation to the St. Luke's Foundation in Texas has brought them into the spotlight. Sunita Agarwal expressed discomfort with the attention, stating that they believe philanthropy should focus on creating a legacy of giving rather than seeking publicity.

Philanthropic Philosophy

In an interview with New India Abroad, Sunita said, "My husband and I have made several donations, but we prefer not to talk about or advertise them. This time, St. Luke's published the details on their website, which is how everyone found out." She added, "For my husband and me, education and health are the most important areas to focus on for our philanthropic work. But we don't like to discuss the details even with our children."

Background of Brij Agarwal

Brij Agarwal is a Texas-based Indian-American entrepreneur. He serves as the CEO and president of VKC Group, a restaurant management and franchise company that operates numerous locations in the Greater Houston region. Born in India, Agarwal moved to Houston in 1979 at the age of 17. He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Houston in 1988 and began his engineering career. He worked as a lead engineer for MW Kellogg and later became CEO for ABM Industries.

In 1988, he founded VKC Group with a single store. As the business expanded, he turned his attention to philanthropy. He established a Presidential Endowment at the Cullen College for Engineering at his alma mater, the University of Houston, which provides several scholarships.

Impact of the Donation

The $5.5 million pledge to Sugar Land Hospital comes at a time when Indians in Texas are facing hostility due to what some describe as a 'takeover of Texas' by Indians. Social media users questioned why hate-mongers overlook the contributions of Indian-origin individuals like the Agarwals to the state.

In 2022, the couple donated $1 million to the University of Houston's Sugar Land campus to support manufacturing education and research facilities. In recognition, the university named the Brij and Sunita Agrawal Auditorium in their honor.
