A 19-year-old Indian student, Komalpreet Kaur, tragically died in Perth, Australia, after being struck by a car and trapped underneath the vehicle. The accident occurred last Saturday around 11:30 PM at the Bentley Plaza car park on Albany Highway, near John Street. Komalpreet was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with critical injuries but succumbed to her injuries later.
Details of the Accident
The 19-year-old driver of a blue Hyundai i30 hatchback has not been charged and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Witnesses reported that the driver knew Komalpreet and pleaded with bystanders to call for an ambulance. Nathan Burge, who was present at the scene, described hearing a loud bang. He recalled, 'I just started to yell out, ‘Any man, any man’, I’m pointing at people, getting them over, ‘Any male, any male’, I wanted to flip that car over.' Burge added that a group of 10 to 12 people helped lift the car, and someone pulled Komalpreet out from under it.
Community Response and Fundraiser
A woman from the crowd performed CPR on Komalpreet until paramedics arrived. A fundraiser was initiated with a target of $50,000 Australian dollars, but donations have surpassed $82,000. Organizer Harpinder Singh Kaler wrote, 'It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking loss of Komalpreet Kaur, a beautiful 19-year-old young woman who tragically passed away in a car accident in Perth, Australia. Komalpreet was full of life, kindness, and dreams for the future. Her sudden passing has left her family and friends devastated and struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.' The funds will cover funeral expenses, memorial arrangements, and repatriation of her body to India. Komalpreet, originally from Ludhiana, was studying nursing in Perth and working part-time. Her father, Amrik Singh, is a retired Subedar from the Indian Army.
