Iran's Hormuz Gift to Xi and Putin Shocks Trump; Qatar Warns

In a significant development, Iran has reportedly offered special access to the Strait of Hormuz to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, a move that has left former US President Donald Trump shocked. This so-called 'Hormuz Gift' is seen as a strategic maneuver to strengthen ties between Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing, while potentially sidelining Western powers.

Qatar's Stark Warning

Meanwhile, Qatar, a key ally of the United States, has issued a stark warning amid the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at a security conference in Singapore, Qatari Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani described the Strait of Hormuz as the “neck of the world.” He cautioned that its closure would create problems far beyond the Middle East, affecting global energy supplies and maritime trade.

Call for Dialogue

The Qatari minister argued that the crisis cannot be solved through military action alone. He called for direct, open dialogue with Iran, emphasizing that Tehran will always play a central role in the waterway's future. “Any solution must include Iran,” he stated, urging the international community to engage constructively.

Gulf Cooperation Council's Stance

Sheikh Saoud also revealed that Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states are still working toward a common strategy on Iran but have yet to reach a unified position. The GCC, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar, has been divided on how to approach Tehran, with some members advocating for engagement and others favoring a harder line.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments, with about 20% of the world's petroleum passing through it. Any disruption could lead to skyrocketing energy prices and economic instability worldwide. The situation remains tense as Iran continues to assert its control over the waterway, while the US and its allies weigh their options.
